On Friday, 17 February 2023, Timișoara turns into the European Capital of Culture, an occasion for which, in Piața Unirii, more than 15,000 city residents and visitors alike are expected. Hundreds of events will be organized during the weekend of February 17-19: exhibitions, workshops, concerts, guided tours, plays, etc.
More than 100 high-ranking officials, including representatives of the Commission and the European Parliament, have confirmed that they will attend the official opening of TM2023. The Royal House of Romania will be represented by Her Majesty Margareta Custodian of the Romanian Crown and His Royal Highness Prince Radu of Romania.
Also on Friday, European Commissioner Adina Vălean will present the city with the Melina Mercouri award of the European Commission, which is awarded to European capitals of culture if all the obligations assumed through the application file have been successfully fulfilled.
The opening ceremony will be attended by 40 ambassadors, 20 of whom are from European Union countries, MEPs, Romanian parliamentarians, members of the Romanian Government and high-ranking officials from the European Commission, ministers of culture and mayors from European and Romanian cities.
